Frequently Asked Questions
You can do this in Workday. Here are the instructions.
We recommend that any student getting one of the majors in our department have an official advisor within the department and check in with that advisor during advising times, even if they have another advisor in a different department. This will make it easier to get the most up-to-date information about the programs in the department and to trouble shoot if you are having trouble with things like choosing electives or scheduling classes.
If you add a new program of study, the registrar’s office should assign you an advisor in the department. Contact the Center for Student Success if (a) this doesn’t happen or (b) you want a specific advisor (perhaps an instructor you have had in previous courses or someone who has already been talking to you about the program(s) you are interested in.)
Each semester we have a number of students who successfully take courses without having the official prerequisites. The first step to make this happen is to reach out to your advisor and/or the instructor of the course. If, after talking with them, it seems reasonable for you to take the course without the formal prerequisites, you can initiate the override request in Workday.
Yes! Most summers we have multiple teams of students working with faculty in the department. Be sure to watch for announcements early in the spring semester and apply by the deadline.
Another option is do an off-campus research experience or internship. Internships are especially important for actuarial science majors, and many actuarial firms have internship programs you can apply to. The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds a number of REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) sites around the country.
