Some advice for Actuarial Science students

Here is some advice from Prof. Scofield for our acturial science students.

• It is better to take Stat 344 than Stat 341 for VEE (Validation by Educational Experience, an official way the Society of Actuaries recognizes courses related to actuarial science).

  • Stat 344 is offered every other spring, so you need to plan ahead.
  • Stat 343 is a prerequisite and is offered every fall.

• To get an internship,

  • Apply in Fall (preferably before October) of junior year,
  • Try to pass at least one actuarial exam (FM, is a good option) before applying to increase your chances of getting an internship.

• FIN 301 lists minimum grades in BUS 201, ACCT 203, as if these courses are prerequisites. But these courses are not required for actuarial science majors.

• The description for ECON 343 lists ECON 243 as a prerequisite. But having taken STAT 243 or STAT 343 is sufficient for obtaining approval from the ECON 343 instructor to enroll.
  STAT 143 and STAT 145 are not considered sufficient.
